I can't even remember what the feature's called, but I remember it breaking a lot. Windows has had the ability to work with disconnected files for many years, but it's always been a real pain in the ass.

So, to facilitate making a NAS as useful as possible, it would be nice to have some sort of automatic caching system from a network filesystem, OR, maybe not something directly implemented by the network filesystem itself, but by a meta-filesystem that sits on top (sort of like how Linux has a variety of meta-fileystems for implementing things like transparent encryption, where the feature isn't implemted at the 'real' filesystem level, but by the meta-filesystem driver sitting between the user and the real filesystem. What I'm wanting to know, is there an easy way to avoid having to manually locally caching recently/frequently used files?Ĭopying files back and forth between a local hdd/ssd and the NAS can be both tedious and error prone ("Oops! I just copied an older version over a newer version!" or "Oops, I forgot to copy the latest version of that critical file to my laptop before I left home, and now I'm stuck with an old and wrong version!").
